Church of Cyril and Methodius in Ľubochňa

The Roman-Catholic church of St. Cyril and Methodius is situated in the town of Ľubochňa, approximately 12 km away from the centre of Ružomberok. The church is situated on the left bank of the Ľubochnianka stream, you need to cross the bridge from the square.

The church, as apparent from its name, is consecrated to the memory of St. Cyril and St. Methodius. Originally, only a chapel with the same name stood in this place. The foundation stone of the chapel was consecrated by Andrej Hlinka in 1937. Exactly one year later, he consecrated the chapel as well. An interesting fact is that it was his last church-related public act. In the second half of the 90’s, the chapel was rebuilt, and since 1997, the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius has stood in this place.

Above the main entrance, the letters read: “Church of St. Cyril and Methodius”. Above the back entrance, it says in visible letters: “May God protect the legacy of our fathers.” This sentence points to the spiritual legacy left here by the preachers from Salonica, to whom the church is consecrated.

From the architectural point of view, the church is a modern sacral building. The interior of the church is interesting. In the area behind the altar, there is a large glass wall, through which you can see outside. In the centre of the wall, there is a wood carving of the crucified Jesus Christ. To the right of the altar, you can see the sculptural group of St. Cyril and St. Methodius. St. Cyril is wearing colourful cleric clothing, he is holding a crozier with a cross at the top in his left hand and he is giving us a blessing with his right hand. St. Methodius is wearing a black monastic habit and he is holding a thick book tucked under his left arm, probably the Bible, with the Cyril-Methodian double cross on the cover. To the left of the altar, there is a statue of Virgin Mary.

Near the back entrance, there is a wood-carved statue of the preachers and also a small chapel with a statue of Virgin Mary.
