Places to visit

Larger chapels are used as churches and they served mainly for smaller groups of people. Chapels are used for serving masses, the same way as churches. They are full of sacral motives in the form of artistic works of altars, paintings, statues or other aesthetically or artistically valuable works, which create considerable value of Slovak culture. The same way as crosses, these small chapels were built in the past mainly at the important crossroads, in order to help the passers-by decide in which direction to go, and also to allow them to express gratitude for having safely passed the previous section of the road, and that became the basis for the expression “ways of the cross”. Nowadays, chapels are also built at attractive locations, particularly locations with a view, and also locations which are visited by communities of believers as part of pilgrimages.
