Birth House of Andrej Hlinka

This is the house where Andrej Hlinka, an important Slovak patriot, was born on September 27, 1864.

It is situated in Ružomberok’s town district Černová, approximately 4 km away from the centre of the town, at “A. Hlinku” Street.

In the house, you can see an exhibition about the life and the work of A. Hlinka. There is a room with furniture from the period as well as Hlinka’s personal possessions and manuscripts. We can see, for example, Hlinka’s bed, fishing rod, breviary or his clerical robe. In another room, there are information panels and a wax figurine of A. Hlinka.There is a lot of interesting information to learn about his life, childhood, about the modest circumstances in which he grew up, his profession of a priest, but also about his political activities.

Andrej Hlinka was an important Slovak patriot, politician and priest, one of the main fighters for the autonomy of Slovakia. He was born into a poor family of raftsmen, he studied to become a priest, he was the founder of the Slovak People’s Party, a member of the Prague’s Chamber of Deputies, and he fought for the autonomy of Slovakia until the end of his life.

Situated in the vicinity of A. Hlinka’s birth house, at the same street, is also the place where the events known as Tragedy in Černová took place in 1907. There is also a plaque commemorating the events at the place of the massacre.
