Places to visit

The Hunyady Tower is a part of the Likava Castle, and it houses an exhibition where you can learn a lot of interesting facts about the history of the castle.

It is situated on a castle cliff above the town of Likavka, approximately 3 km away from the centre of Ružomberok, as the crow flies.

The exhibition consists of visual as well as tangible exhibits. Among the things to see, there are replicas of torture instruments, such as a rack or a crusher, but displayed are also swords, halberds or replicas of the period furniture. There is a detailed description of the history of the castle on the display panels. You can also look at the photographic documentation of the castle from recent decades, reproductions of historical engravings, wood carvings, drawings and paintings, drawing documentation of the archaeological findings, photos of the exhibits obtained during the archaeological research of the castle or the exhibits from historical collections of the Liptov Museum.

A lecturer and guides are also available at the castle.

The best place to start a trip to the castle is at “Koliba Likava”. From there, follow the red hiking mark, pass under the motorway bridge, then you arrive at a woodland path. Get off the hiking trail here and turn right towards the castle. You will reach the castle in about 20 minutes.

The Likava Castle is the largest castle in Liptov and one of the largest castle buildings in central Slovakia. In the past, the castle guarded an important trade route running from Považie, through Liptov, to Orava, and continuing further to Poland. Moreover, with its height (over 36 metres at the highest point of the northern palace), it is one of the highest castles in Slovakia.
