Church of St. Simon and Jude in Liptovské Sliače

The Roman-Catholic, Gothic church of St. Simon and Jude in Liptovské Sliače is a dominant element in this largest town in Lower Liptov.

It is situated in the centre of the town, at J. Kútnika – Šmálova Square, in the town area called Stredný Sliač, approximately 11 km away from the centre of Ružomberok.

The church is particularly known for its painting of Virgin Mary the Guardian, who was for many years depicted on the one-thousand Slovak Crown bill.

Inside the church, one should also notice the large painting of Virgin Mary with apostles St. Peter and Paul from 1517, which is the largest preserved medieval painting in the entire Slovakia. Located in the church are also several wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries.

The church dates as far back as the 14th century. In the 17th century, they added the tower and the fortified wall. In the 19th century, the church was painted by a local native and an academic painter, Jozef Hanula.
